A Bad Day

Yesterday was a a bad day. We had made our escape from Maya Pedal but we were in shock and had no idea what to do next. We had expected to have at least a few weeks to plan our next move and now we had nothing. Our budget has also gone to pot as we were expecting to live very cheaply while volunteering and even in a cheap hostel the costs mount up.

I slept really badly, kept waking up and looking online to try and find a solution to our predicament, even though I knew it was probably better to not worry over it straight away. Helpx is financially viable but there aren’t many suitable placements in Central America. Flights out are expensive, except to the States. We had fluctuated between thinking of going on to Chile or ditching our entire plan and flying to South Africa or New Zealand. By the time Sean woke up I had come up with a plan to fly to LA, helpx in California and fly on to Chile later in the year. Sean monosyllabically agreed but he was very uncommunicative and I could tell he didn’t agree but all my attempts at getting him to discuss it failed.

Eventually fatigue caught up with me and I gave up trying to talk to Sean, felt overwhelmed by everything and tearful. By this time Sean was engaging more and was thinking along the lines of renting an apartment in Antigua for a month but I couldn’t think about it any more so we reached a bit of an impasse. My inclination was to get away somewhere relaxing. After a few tears (mostly mine!) and some hugs we finally found a way of resolving all this.

We are moving to Lake Atitlan for a week. It’s a beautiful lake a couple of hours from here. We’ve booked a very reasonably priced studio through airbnb, which means we’ll have our own front door, somewhere to cook and we can properly unpack for the first time since leaving home! After that we plan to go to Quetzaltenango for a week, Copan in Honduras for a week and then to the beach in El Salvador, but all of this is flexible.

I’m really looking forward to it all now and realise how lucky we are to have each other and all these amazing options.

Limited internet access next week.

  1. Oh you poor things! All those well laid plans! However it does sound as if you have made the best of the situation and thank goodness you are in an amazing part of the world in which to explore and hopefully relax for a while. Who knows what may turn up now. Gill xxxx
